Love Hina spends many episodes characterization the interesting character Motoko. A skilled swordswoman, as well as a rather weak emotional character, Motoko is both fun and interesting to have in the episodes. She is the bodyguard of Hinata, and often punishes Keitaro for his crude behavior toward Naru. Because of her sword abilities (Kendo), she has many admirers and fans, and they are always cheering for her when she is in public. Normally, one would feel proud or happy when people cheer, but Motoko becomes embarrassed because she can't handle happy emotions very well. Since it takes much discipline for martial arts, she has adapted to harsh conditions and not subsurve to her emotional desires. Motoko has a fear of being too girly, and prefers to be tomboyish, and also fears turtles. Yup, tama is a big trouble for her.

Motoko believes that being around men makes her weak because it would let her emotions take over, therefore decreasing her sword abilities. As later episodes reveal, being around men actually instills love into her, therefore making her stronger. It's just her attitude toward the subject that alters her strength. Motoko also has a older sister for who is her idol. She believes her sister is the perfect warrior. Motoko is afraid that she can't live up to her sister's standards all the way until episode 25. In episode 25, she finally gained her sister's respect and ends the series with the "happily ever after" theme.
